| Answer: | You have an inflammation of the urethra, the tube leading from the bladder and through the penis to the outside.
There are a number of causes for this condition, including bladder infections and gonorrhoea, but by far the most common cause in men is a venereal disease called non-specific urethritis (NSU). This may be associated with a slight white dischatge from the penis, but many men have no other symptoms than burning when passing urine. Unfortunately, women may not develop symptoms until the disease has been present for months or years, by which time they may have develop a widespread infection in their pelvis that can lead to infertility, abnormal pregnancies, and damage to the cervix and womb.
Diagnosis is sometimes difficult, because a negative test does not mean that the disease is not present, only that the test has failed to detect it. All men with this problem, and all their sexual partners, will need to be treated with a special course of antibiotics. Fortunately this is successful in curing the vast majority of these cases.
