Question:I am 63 years old and a severe asthmatic. I need oxygen several times a day, but it is costing me a lot of money to have the cylinders filled. Is there something else I can do?
Answer:It is initially necessary to ensure that your asthma is as well controlled as possible. With severe asthma, you should be under the regular care of both your general practitioner and a respiratory physician. Hopefully, you may be weaned off the oxygen, as it is both inconvenient and expensive. If you must continue using oxygen regularly, it may be worthwhile buying, hiring or leasing an oxygen concentrator. These are machines that take oxygen from the air and concentrate it so that you do not have to buy your oxygen in cylinders. If you are finding that you have continuing financial problems, or if you want more information about these machines, you should contact the Asthma Foundation which will be listed in the phone book for the capital city of your state.
