Question:What is HIV? Is AIDS other scientific name of HIV? Where can I get tested for HIV?
Answer:The term HIV stands for Human Immunodeficiency Virus. The HIV is a retro Virus that attacks special white blood cells called T-cells, a lymphocyte responsible for body immunity for invading germs. They multiply and destroy the T-cells damaging the body' s immune system for fighting germs and diseases.

The term AIDS stands for Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome. The HIV virus causes AIDS- a condition in which body immune system is badly damaged and a person may develop serious opportunistic infections (a situation where weak immune system of the body provides opportunity for pathogens to infect which can' t be possible in healthy immune system).

Thus, HIV and AIDS is not the same thing. If a HIV infection occurs to a person, the time period in which HIV progresses to AIDS may be different depending upon certain factors. It may take years for HIV breaking down the immune system of the body and casing the AIDS. The person may appear healthy for years containing the HIV virus with little or no symptoms.

You can get tested for HIV at private clinics or Hospitals providing AIDS related treatment and services. At various clinics they may keep your name confidential saving you from any social stigma.
