Question:I need to work on the computer for long hours. For the past few days, I am experiencing burning ache in my forearm and in the wrist. My pain increases especially when I use the mouse or do some wrist activity. I can not quit working as it' s a necessity for me. What shall I do?
Answer:Computer has become an essential in modern life and in various occupations. Longer working hours at a computer may cause health problems like injuries to the upper arm due to overuse resulting in arm pain. Your symptoms indicate that you might be suffering from Radial Tunnel Syndrome (RTS). Though it is not very common injury, its frequency is increasing day by day.

Radial nerve is one of three main peripheral nerves that provide sensation to the back side of the forearm and the hand. It is also responsible for providing power to specific muscles responsible for certain wrist movements. Repetitive movements like working on mouse may cause swelling in the tissue around the radial nerve, which in turn results in aching, burning, or numbness sensation.

You should try to keep your mouse at the same height as your keyboard is. When you use the mouse, use the whole arm rather only the wrist. While working on keyboard try to type lightly and gently. And remove your hands from the keyboard or mouse, when you are not using them and let your hand and wrist relax at certain intervals.

If your problems persist, immediately visit a doctor.
