Question:My son is 18 months old and has developed some cracks around his anus skin from constipation. It' s painful for him particularly when he passes the stool. What should I do? Any help will be appreciated.
Answer:Anal fissure or crack is very common in young children. Constipation is the major culprit for anal fissure in kids. These cracks make it painful, when kid passes the stool since stool is generally hard due to constipation. Sometimes your child may withhold his bowl movements which in turn will aggravate his constipation.

There are a lot of medicated creams or ointment available in the market to heal those anal cracks or fissures. But, always consult a pediatrician before applying them.

Provide your child more fluid (especially water) and fibrous food to check the constipation. A lot of milk intake also causes constipation in kids. So, reduce the amount of milk and dairy products given to your child. If you put your kid on diaper, change them frequently and ensure that your son is not in wet diaper for a long period. Young children anal fissures are generally self-heal. You only need to do is to provide good diet and maintain diaper hygiene.
