Question:I would like to know about different type of anesthesia given during therapeutic procedures. Who is an anesthesiologist and how doe he administer the anesthesia?
Answer:Anesthesia is administered by medication or anesthetic drugs given to the patients to relieve the pain or sensation during surgery. Anesthesia helps the patients in the surgery without any pain and anxiety.

There are various types of anesthesia depending upon the type of surgery and the patient' s health condition.

The different types of anesthesia are:

Local anesthesia - local anesthesia is given in a specific small area of the body to numb that particular part only during surgery. A patient is conscious and awake during the local anesthesia. Normally an injection is given for the local anesthesia to numb the particular area. The local anesthesia lasts for a short time only. Generally, local anesthesia is used in minor surgeries.

Regional anesthesia - Regional anesthesia is given to numb the larger part of body. Regional and general anesthesias are often combined during a therapeutic surgery.

General anesthesia- General anesthesia is given when there is need of complete unconsciousness of the patient during the surgery. General anesthesia is administered intravenously or inhaled. An ET tube (breathing tube) may be inserted into the trachea to maintain the proper breathing during the surgery.

Anesthesiologists are skilled professionals who administer and manage anesthesia given during a therapeutic procedure. Anesthesiologists determine the type and dosage of anesthesia given to the patient. The Anesthesiologists checks the patient' s health condition and medical history to decide the suitable anesthesia for the patient. They are also responsible for the administering and treating various vital functions like breathing - which could be affected by the anesthesia given during the surgery. They also diagnose and provide treatment for the problems occurring during or after the surgery.
