Question:I was taking antibiotics for fever (due to some bacterial infection) I was suffering from. Now, the symptoms are gone. Do I need to continue the doses for the specified period of time recommended by the doctor or can I stop taking the antibiotic as I am feeling healthy now?
Answer:You must complete the entire course of antibiotic as recommended by your doctor. It is very essential to take the antibiotics as directed even if the symptoms disappear in between. Antibiotics are required to be taken till the bacteria causing the infection are eliminated completely. So, people are prescribed to take the antibiotic for a specific time period (generally for 5 days or more). If you stop the treatment in between, it is quite possible that you may get the infection again as the bacteria responsible for the infection was not eliminated completely. Another, important reason is that it may help in the development of antibiotic-resistant bacteria.
