Question:What would you recommend for my 14 year old grandson, who has poor concentration and short term memory skills?
Answer:Impaired concentration can blight the teenage years. The problem is often down to an imbalance in blood sugar, and a diet poor in omega 3 fats. So first off, ask your grandson to take an honest look at how many sug- ary and starchy snacks he' s eating. Like many teenagers he could be overdosing on refmed carbohydrates such as potatobased snacks, or munching regularly on sweets.

Stimulants are another bugbear, so he' ll need to look at his tea, coffee and cola intake. All these can send blood sugar into orbit, then as suddenly cause it to crash, jeop- ardising his ability to concentrate as he teeters between a sugar high and total exhaustion. Try to wean him off these baddies and on to a diet higher in fresh vegetables and fruits, slow-release carbohydrates such as whole- wheat or rye bread and pasta, and high-quality proteins such as fish and free range organic chicken.

Snacking on a combination of seeds and nuts with fruit can help by balancing his protein and carbohydrate. As for omega-3s, upping his intake of oily fish such as mackerel, herrings and salmon (organically farmed or wild) is ideal. Three times a week is a good rule. Or he can have a dessertspoon of ground flax seeds on his cereal in the morning. In addition to a good multivitamin, I would recommend a ' brain food' supplement and additional essential fats, either as a supplement or by using a blend of essential oils in on food.
