Question:What' s your view on macrobiotic diets?
Answer:Macrobiotics is based on the principle that all life can be viewed as a balance of two energies: yin and yang. For example, men and daytime are yang, while women and nighttime are yin. Foods are also classified as yin and yang. Meat, for example, is yang. In practice, macrobiotics recommends eating unrefmed wholefoods with an emphasis towards vegetarian foods.

As such it is consistent with current views of optimum nutrition. It also recommends avoiding sugar, alcohol and stimulants. There are, however, some differences.

Macrobiotics recommends little fruit, especially in the winter, on the basis that these fruits are out of season. In this respect a macrobiotic diet is unlikely to provide optimal intakes of vitamin C and other antioxidants.
