Question:I suffer from colitis. Are there any nutritional remedies that can help?
Answer:In colitis, the large intestine is inflamed, so reducing inflammation is key. Fish oils rich in omega-3 fatty acids are natural anti-inflammatories. But that' s only part of the jigsaw. Many colitis sufferers also find relief by avoiding foods they are sensitive to - most commonly wheat, milk and yeast, although coffee, tea and spices can add to the problem. Easily digested foods, such as steamed vegetables, rice, fish and fruit, plus digestive enzyme supplements, often help.

You also need to replenish beneficial bacteria in the gut, which will help protect the gut wall, by taking a supplement such as acidophilus. Doctors have found that people with colitis are likely to have what is called a ' leaky gut' - an overly porous intestinal wall. This is a fairly serious condition that demands a dual approach: avoiding foods you are sensitive to, and repairing the gut lining with nutrients such as glutamine. It' s best to work with a nutritionist who can design a programme to meet your particular needs.
