Question:I thought beans and greens were good for you, but when I eat them I get bloated. Why?
Answer:Beans and greens are good for you: they contain a rich variety of nutrients including protein, minerals and vitamins. Yet beans, cabbage, Brussels sprouts, cauliflower, turnips, leeks, onions and garlic can all cause gas and bloating. The culprits are the indigestible carbohydrates they contain, such as galactosides.

While a small amount of gas from eating these foods is quite normal, excessive gas can be prevented by supplementing the enzyme alpha-galactosidase. This breaks down the indigestible carbohydratesand reduces flatulence. Some digestive enzyme formulas contain this enzyme as well as enzymes that digest protein, fat and carbohydrate. You can also help yourself by eating slowly and chewing well, plus making sure your digestion is working as well as it can be. If all else fails, charcoal tablets or capsules are effective absorbers of gas, helping to reduce flatulence and bloating.
