Question:I have a terrible back pain that the doctors can' t fix. Both my parents died from bowel cancer, and I' m scared that I may have this too. Can bowel cancer cause back pain?
Answer:Yes, often after it has spread to the bones in your back, but sometimes because it is inflaming the nerves and muscles that it rests on. Bowel cancer is usually detected because of irregular bowel habits, blood on the faeces, abdominal pain or progressive loss of weight. Once back pain is present, the cancer is usually quite advanced. Bowel cancer has a better than 50% cure rate, but the later it is detected, the worse the prognosis. Any back pain should be investigated to find a cause, as should any change in bowel habits or bleeding from the bowel. Suggest the possible diagnosis to your doctor, and s/he will arrange for an x-ray or endoscopic examination of your bowel to put your mind at ease that there is no cancer present, or confirm your worst fears, and start treatment as soon as possible.
