Question:What is Graves' disease and what can I do to treat it?
Answer:Graves' disease is a hyperthyroid condition caused by a basic defect in the immune system. People with Graves' suffer from an array of symptoms, including weight loss, fatigue, eye problems and muscle weakness. The condition may well be exacerbated by food sensitivities and has specifically been linked to gluten, the protein found in grains suchas wheat, barley and rye. But there could be another underlying factor. People with autoimmune conditions often have raised homocysteine - a natural by-product of protein metabolism that should be converted to other substances, but can get ' stuck' without sufficient nutrients from the diet to do this.

I strongly recommend you see a nutritional therapist who can test you for potential food intolerances and check your homocysteine levels.

If after testing you find your levels of homocysteine are above 10, supplementing with B12, B6 and folic acid has been shown to lower levels. And if you find you have intolerance to gluten, you can cut these grains out of your diet.
