Question:What sort of dietary advice would you recommend for someone suffering from hiatus hernia?
Answer:A hiatus hernia happens when the top part of the stomach moves up through the hole in the diaphragm through which the oesophagus runs. Severe heartburn and acid reflux from the stomach can result. So it' s vital to minimize your intake of gastric irritants - aspirin, coffee, alcohol, very hot drinks and spicy food - and reduce the amount of concentrated, protein-rich and therefore acidic foods you eat, such as meat, fish and eggs, in favor of vegetable proteins such as beans or tofu. If muscle spasm is involved, capsules of peppermint oil, which is an anti-spasmodic, can be of benefit.

There are also physical techniques practised by naturopaths and some osteopaths and kinesiologists that can help correct this condition, so you may want to book an appointment with one, having checked they practice this therapy.
