Question:I' m having my wisdom teeth out. Can you recommend something that will help me deal with the effects of the general anaesthetic?
Answer:Vitamin C helps detoxify the body from the effects of anaesthetic, either local or general. Take 5g spread over the day, for two days after, then 3g a day for a week. This vitamin also helps the body to heal and has been shown to speed recovery from surgery, as does the amino acid glutamine: take 5g a day on an empty stomach until your mouth is healed. An additional 3,300mcg (10,000iu) of vitamin A (retinol) per day is also helpful, as is zinc. You should get enough of both by taking a high strength multivitamin twice a day on an ongoing basis.

Right before surgery, you can keep taking your supplements, except for omega-3s, vitamin E and - garlic, as these can thin the blood and cause clotting problems. I would also avoid taking very large amounts (above 2g) of vitamin C, since this might make the anaesthetic a little less effective. As for eating well after surgery; there are plenty of no-chew options. Try smoothies made with fruit, ground nuts and seeds and yoghurt, or Get Up & Go! whizzed up in the blender with dairy or soya milk and fruit. Soups blended with silken tofu are good too.
