Question:I' ve heard that fish oil supplements aren' t safe because they contain toxic PCBs. Is this true?
Answer:It all depends on the brand. If you buy the cheapest fish oil supplements, you are very likely to get the cheapest the producer could find, and it' s more likely that the oil has not had the PCBs removed. These harmful industrial pollutants are found in most oceans, and hence in marine fish.

There are several good brands of fish oil that are free of such toxins. Two that have consistently come out the purest in independent tests are Seven Seas and Higher Nature. They manage this by either initially sourcing their oils from minimally polluted waters, and/or using effective methods for removing any traces of toxins. With this in mind, it' s completely safe to take fish oil supplements as long as you choose a reputable brand. If you' re very concerned, you could ask the manufacturer whether they guarantee their supplements to be PCB-free.
