Question:I' m 42 years old, and I wouldn' t mind ageing a little more gracefully. Any suggestions?
Answer:There is much you can do to slow the ageing process. And it' s quite an issue these days, with a number of gerontologists and other scientists predicting that many of us will soon be living to over 100.

One key to, as you say, growing old gracefully, is large amounts of antioxidants. Professor Denham Harman of the University of Nebraska Medical School says that there is a 99 per cent chance that oxidants or free radicals, produced during the combustion process (anything from running a car to smoking a cigarette and barbequeing a piece of meat), cause ageing. But antioxidants - vitamin A and beta-carotene, vitamins C and E, bioflavonoids, anthocyanidins and over 100 other protectors - can mop these nasties up. I recommend taking 2g of vitamin C a day combined with two antioxidant complexes, and would increase to 3g of C and three complexes a day if you' re older than 50.

Antioxidants, however, are only half the story. B vitamins control a vital process in the body called ' methylation' . This process is vital for keeping your cells young, by protecting DNA and allowing you to build healthy new cells. A high-strength multivitamin should provide optimal amounts of B vitamins.

Another key ingredient in the graceful ageing formula is exercise. Aerobic activity is essential, reducing cholesterol levels in your blood, pulse rate and blood pressure and keeping your mind sharp. So try cycling, swimming and running.
