Question:Do those antioxidant creams really stop you ageing?
Answer:Yes and no. Depending on the amounts of forms of the antioxidant nutrients in them, they will slow down the ageing process of your skin. But do compare the actual amounts of, say, vitamin E. For a cream to have any real benefit it should provide at least 20mg per gram. One of my favourites is Dermalogica' s Multivitamin Power, (see www.dermalogica.com). This is a capsule of highly absorbent antioxidants. After piercing it, you rub the contents into the skin.

The actual ageing process of the body is to do with how perfectly your cells are replaced, since we are permanently renewing ourselves. The skin, for example, is completely new every 20 days. Antioxidants protect your DNA, the blueprint for new cells. That' s why it' s also important to eat foods rich in antioxidants. I also supplement an antioxidant complex every day that contains vitamin A and E, plus glutathione, which is the body' s most powerful antioxidant.

B vitamins, especially B6, B12 and folic acid, also stop DNA from becoming damaged. A good wholefood diet plus a high-strength multivitamin is the best way to keep your Bs up. Strict vegetarians, watch out. There' s no B12 in vegetables. You need meat, fish, eggs, dairy produce or supplements to get enough B12. Your supplement should provide at least 10mcg.
