Question:I have to take a short course of antibiotics for a sinus infection, but I usually get an upset stomach whenever I have them. Is there anything I can do to stop this?
Answer:Taking a probiotic supplement will help to repopulate your gut with the healthy bacteria that antibiotics can wipe out, which is what may be the cause of your stomach upsets. The two most prevalent strains of beneficial bacteria are Lactobacillus acidophilus and Bifidobacterium bifidus. Some fermented products such as kefir contain these bacteria, but probiotic supplements are a more direct way to boost levels. It' s best to take probiotics on an empty stomach - one tablet first thing in the moming and again before you go to bed. Start when you begin the antibiotics and continue for one week afteryou finish the course.
