Question: | I am worried the pill may make me sterile. Is it necessary to take a break from the contraceptive pill every year or so? |
Answer: | No! The modern pills are very low in the total dosage of hormones. You can stay on the pill for many years without a break, and when you wish to fall pregnant, the pill can be stopped and you may find yourself in the family way as soon as two weeks later. There is absolutely no evidence to implicate the pill as a cause of permanent sterility.
Some women do have a delay in the return of their periods after taking the pill, but if you are sterile after taking the pill, you would have been sterile if you had never taken it.
The greatest side effect from the regular stopping of the pill is an unwanted pregnancy. Women who are overweight or who smoke should ensure that they are on the lowest possible dose of the pill.
