Question:Can I take the contraceptive pill when breast feeding?
Answer:It is possible to fall pregnant while breast feeding, and it is therefore necessary to take contraceptive precautions if you wish to avoid having a very rapidly expanding family. The normal combined hormone contraceptive pills are probably best avoided during breast feeding, but many women can successfully use the single-hormone mini-pills. These must be taken at the same time every day, and without any break during the month. They are not quite as reliable as the combined pill, with a failure rate of 3% to 5%, and once you finish breast feeding it is wise to use the combined pill instead. While you are feeding and on the mini-pill, you will probably have no periods, ot scanty, irregular periods.
