Question:Why do I have to go to the doctor just to get my birth control pill prescription? I have to pay for a doctor' s visit as well as for the pills.
Answer:The birth control pill is a medication which can only be obtained with a doctor' s prescription. The doctor will use the consultation to make sure that you are healthy and that there are no untoward effects from taking this medication on a long-term basis. At yearly consultations, your doctor may take your blood pressure, do a Pap smear, and internal and breast examination, enquire about your general health, and counsel you about possible problems such as obesity, smoking, alcohol, stress, family and sexual problems. In this way the doctor is practising preventive medicine, and you are getting value for your money.
