Question: | Are there any long-term side effects from a vasectomy. Is it a safe option considering recent research? |
Answer: | A vasectomy is a very safe and effective form of permanent contraception. There are operations to reverse the operation, but success (as measured by a subsequent pregnancy in a partner) is only about 60%. Long term consequences are few and rare. A small number of men have experienced inflammation of a testicle due to a reaction against their own retained sperm, but the vast majority of men have no problems once the immediate effects of the operation have settled, and continue on with their sex life as normal.
The operation does not stop ejaculation, just removes sperm from the semen that is ejaculated. Erections, libido and hormone production are also unaffected.
