Question:My doctor says my son has flat feet, but is ignoring the problem. Are flat feet serious?
Answer:Flat feet have traditionally been an excuse to avoid military service, and the cause of a great deal of anxiety in parents of these children. Pes planus (medical jargon for flat feet) is no longer considered to be a serious condition, and no treatment other than well-fitting shoes is required. The commonest complications are an awkward gait and distorted shoes, but rarely any pain or discomfort. In some children in may cause knock-knees, but only gross deformities require surgery.
