Question:I have a painful swollen foot. What could cause this?
Answer:Whatever the cause, you should see a doctor. There are certainly some simple explanations, such as a twist or sprain to one of the joints in the foot, but there are more sinister causes as well, including a severe deep infection, a thrombosed vein and gout. Various types of arthritis may also be responsible, as well as other diseases of muscles and ligaments. If you are an older person, or have taken more exercise than usual recently, it is possible for a stress fracture to be present. There may be no apparent injury to cause these, but they certainly cause pain and swelling.
