Question:My daughter overseas has written to tell me that my new granddaughter has been born with a club foot. I have heard of this condition, but do not understand what it is. Can you explain it to me?
Answer:Club foot is a congenital (present at birth) deformity of the foot that can vary dramatically in severity and can be easily detected at birth. It is characterised by an inturning of the foot, so that if allowed to walk, the infant would walk on the outside edge of the foot and the little toe. Some children merely require binders and splints to correct the condition; others with a more severe condition will need corrective surgery over several years.
