Question:How is thrush in a baby' s mouth treated? Is it serious? Are any special tests necessary?
Answer:Swabs may be taken from mouth to confirm the identity of the fungus responsible for the thrush, but normally no investigations are necessary. Treatment is simple, and involves putting antifungal drops or gels in the mouth, and if necessary antifungal creams around the anus if the infection has spread through the gut to there. Babies can sometimes reinfect themselves by touching the anus with their fingers, and then putting their fingers in their mouth, so both ends are treated, particularly in recurrent cases. Oral thrush rarely causes serious complications and most babies respond rapidly to the correct treatment.
