Question:Baaarrrrooooom! Grnth! Baaarrrroooom! My tummy keeps making these terrible noises all the time, and it is most embarrassing! How can I stop it?
Answer:Onomatopoeia is the term used to describe words that sound like what they mean. The grunts, groans and baarrrooms of your stomach are alliteratively described as borborygmi by doctors and they are due to an overactive intestine as it moves your food from one end of the gut to the other. Some people have more active inrestines than others, but everyone suffers this complaint with infections and some other disorders. A gut obstruction, gastroenteritis, the nervous swallowing of air, eating rapidly and drinking large amounts of aerated drinks can all aggravate the problem. Doctors can prescribe medications to slow down the gut activity, but avoiding the above problems is the best treatment.
