Question:I have had a total hysterectomy and oophorectomy and have to take pills all the time. Why is this so?
Answer:A total hysterectomy and oophorectomy involves the removal of both ovaries as well as the uterus, tubes and cervix. Without ovaries, a woman produces no female hormones. These hormones are responsible for the control of body hair, breast shape and tone, sex drive, bone strength and the characteristic figure of a woman. Oestrogen is the most important sex hormone, and to prevent deterioration of the woman' s figure and health, the hormone is given in pill form until the age that the menopause would normally have occurred. To prevent these complications of the operation, female hormones are given in tablet form on a regular basis, and should be continued until the woman is well past the normal age for her menopause (change of life). It is therefore very important that you continue these pills for as long as necessary.
