Question:I am told my son has a hydro-seal! (sic). His testicle is swollen, but it sounds more like a plumber' s term than a doctor' s! Can you tell me if it is serious?
Answer:A hydrocele has nothing to do with fur-covered aquatic animals or leaking pipes, but is a collection of fluid around a testicle. If you injure your knee, it often becomes swollen with ' fluid on the knee' . The same can apply to the testicle, although injury is not always apparent. The fluid causes no harm to the testicle, but can cause discomfort. If it persists the fluid can be drained away by a needle. Unfortunately it often comes back again, and sometimes an operation is required to correct the problem.
