Question:My foreskin is too tight to be drawn back over the head of my penis during an erection. This makes intercourse uncomfortable for me. Do I need circumcision, and if so, what does this involve?
Answer:It may be that you do need circumcision, as your problem may be eased by a minor procedure that can be done in cases such as yours that is far less radical than circumcision. Under local anaesthetic, a few small cuts can be made into the end of the foreskin to effectively increase its circumference, thus allowing it to retract easily over the head of the penis. Your general practitioner will need to refer you to a urologist for further assessment of your problem to decide what procedure is appropriate. If circumcision is considered necessary, you will be admitted to hospital as a day patient, or possibly overnight. The operation is usually done undet general anaesthetic. The foreskin is cut away, and the cut edges stitched to promote healing and prevent bleeding. It will be painful to have an erection for a couple of weeks, but otherwise the discomfort is not serious. Normal sexual activity can usually be resumed after a month.
