Question:I have been taking Aldactone three times a day for 8 months for the reversal of excessive facial hair. It has been 75% successful, but my doctor says I must keep taking it to maintain the results. I am worried about any side effects, and I would rather not take any tablets, but am dubious about what would happen if I stop them. I would appreciate your opinion.
Answer:Aldactone (also known as Spironolactone) is a very effective drug in significantly reducing the amount of excess facial and body hair present on some women. It is very slow to have an effect, and should be taken for at least four months before any judgment on its effectiveness is made. Quite high doses are also required, but as it is not a new drug, doctors understand a lot about its interactions, and have found it to be very safe in high doses for long periods of time. After six to twelve months, it is usually possible to teduce the dose of Aldactone, and retain its beneficial effects, but if it is stopped altogether, the facial and body hair usually slowly returns.
