Question:I' ve got elbows similar to that of an elephant' s skin—greyish and wrinkly —but I' m only 18, not 81! Occasionally they become raw and painful, not to mention unsightly. Can I do anything about it?
Answer:There is obviously something wrong when a young woman has such unsightly elbow skin. A number of skin diseases, varying from psoriasis and lupus to fungal infections and even birth skin defects may be responsible. Trying to diagnose a skin condition without being able to see the affected skin, even if the condition is described very carefully, is rather like trying to play chess without being able to see the board—very difficult (if not impossible) to get the correct result. I suggest that you see your general practitioner about the problem, and if s/he is unable to help you, seek a referral to a skin specialist (dermatologist). Do this as soon as possible, because with some conditions, delay can lead to permanent skin damage.
