Question:My husband and I have taken Mucaine and Quickeze for many years for a hiatus hernia and reflux. With the scare about aluminium and Alzheimer' s disease, I don' t know if we should keep taking them. We need them despite being on Losec. Can you let me know if there is any proof that they are harmful?
Answer:There is evidence that people with Alzheimer' s disease have an increased level of aluminium in their brains, but there is no evidence that the aluminium causes the Alzheimer' s disease. In fact, the reverse may be true, in thar the Alzheimer' s disease causes the increased levels of aluminium. There is no reason why you should not continue to use Mucaine and Quickeze in moderation to relieve your symptoms, but better still, you should discuss with your general practitioner using a higher dose of Losec, or an additional medication, to prevent your discomfort. Losec is an extremely effective medication, but sometimes it is necessary to use a second medication in combination with it (eg. Tazac, Zantac—all of which require prescriptions) to add to its benefit, or to change to a different medication in the same group (eg. Zoton) to obtain greater benefit. As a last resort, surgery can be performed to prevent acid from running back up from the stomach and causing the pain. The surgery is relatively major, but this may be a better solution than taking pills and mixtures for decades to come.
