Question:I wake up with pins and needles in my left arm most mornings, it settles after 15-20 minutes, but is most annoying. What can I do to stop this?
Answer:You are probably sleeping on your left side, and the pressure on the left arm along with little or no movement in the arm is affecting its blood supply. If nerves are deprived of blood for even a short time, they stop working properly and the affected area becomes numb, develops pins and needles, loses all sensation and rarely may become temporarily paralysed. The solution to your problem is obviously to not sleep on your left side. This is easier said than done, because some people find it difficult to go to sleep in a different position, or roll onto that side during sleep. One simple solution is to sleep on two pillows rather than one. This will alter the angle of your neck, and take some of the weight off the shoulder when lying on your side.
