Question:I am 19 years old and keep getting one or two attacks of tonsillitis every winter. I find it very embarrassing to tell my friends I' m off work because of this children' s disease. What can I do to stop it?
Answer:As a general rule, two attacks a yeat for two years in an adult is sufficient reason to surgically remove the tonsils. Antibiotics can certainly cure nearly all acute attacks of tonsillitis, but you will still experience several days of severe thtoat pain, fever and misery before they can work. I would suggest that you discuss the possibility of referral to an ear, nose and throat specialist with your general practitioner. The operation is quite simple in an adult, and you will only be in hospital for one or two days, and off work for a week. Once the tonsils are out, you can still get throat infections, but these should not be as bad as tonsillitis.
