Question:What can be done for a 9 year old with recurrent nose bleeds? My son has one at least once a week, and often at the worst possible time.
Answer:As a first step, try preventing the nose bleeds by moistening the lining inside the nostrils. This can be done by using an antiseptic cream applied by a cotton bud or little finger to the inside of the nose. If the bleeding persists, medical attention should be sought. In the acute case, doctors can pack the nose with gauze, blow up a small balloon inside the nose, or use adrenalin swabs to stop the bleeding. To prevent recurrences, the bleeding spot needs to be identified and cauterised. This is best done by a specialist ear, nose and throat surgeon who can examine the inside of the nose with a special instrument, identify the bleeding spot, determine the cause of the bleeding and destroy the offending blood vessel with an electric current (cautery), or remove a growth or polyp that may be bleeding.
