Question:My brother' s children have psoriasis in their hair. Has there been any recent development that will cure psoriasis?
Answer:There is no cure for psoriasis, but there are many drugs that will control most cases of the disease. The mainstays of treatment for scalp psoriasis are coal tar shampoos and steroid lotions. There are several different brands of these, and they should be used just frequently enough to control the psoriasis, and no more. The reason for this is that coal tar and its derivatives may cause scalp dryness and irritation if overused, and the steroid lotions are quite expensive and may cause skin damage if used excessively. The condition will come and go, have good periods and bad periods, no matter what treatment is used, but the bad periods should be reasonably controlled if the patient is prepared to use the correct medication consistently.
