Question:I gave birth vaginally five months ago. Since then I have found sex very painful, and have only attempted intercourse four times, each time being very uncomfortable. I had an episiotomy which still does not feel completely healed. What can I do to help this problem?
Answer:Your problem needs to be properly assessed by a gynaecologist, because you have been suffering for far too long. The probability is that the scar tissue from the episiotomy (the cut at the opening of the vagina to allow the baby' s head to escape more easily) has become excessively inflamed, and the episiotomy scar may need to be cut out and restitched. It is also possible that you may have had some damage to the cervix during the birth, and this may the source of your pain.
