Question:After I shave every morning, my neck becomes red raw and itchy. I am seriously contemplating growing a beard. How can I prevent this annoying razor rash?
Answer:Razor rash is due to irritation of the skin by the sctaping of the razor, and an ugly, red itchy rash results. Many men avoid the problem by shaving lightly with an electric razor, and not applying pressure as the razor is used. Astringents and alcohol rubs may harden the skin to prevent the problem, but unfortunately it may persist. A mild steroid cream can be applied to settle down the rash when it flares up. More frequent, gentler shaves are better than infrequent, harder ones.
