Question:My son has a red rash around his mouth. No creams seem to help. What is it?
Answer:Peri-oral dermatitis is very common in children, and often requires no treatment. If severe, it may be due to an allergy, fungal infection, bactetia or just irritation from excess salivation—particularly in children who suck their thumbs! If the simple barrier creams obtainable from chemists are not helping, take your son to a doctor to ensure that there is no treatable cause. Fungal and bacterial infections can be serious and require appropriate treatment. If it is a severe rash due to an allergy or excess salivation, a mild steroid cream may help.
