Question:I have lost my sense of smell. My doctor just says there is nothing that can be done. What should I do?
Answer:It is important that the reason for the loss of smell is found. The most common causes are nasal infections, colds and hay fever. These only cause a temporary loss of smell, as you regain your sense of smell when the problem settles. Some older women lose their sense of smell because of an underactive thyroid gland, and this problem can be proved by blood tests. If confirmed, the appropriate tablets can be prescribed to correct the lack of thyroid hormone. The most sinister cause is a brain tumour, as this can put pressure on the smell nerves at the top of your nose. Anyone with a permanent loss of smell must have tests to exclude this possibility.
