Question:From time to time I have a very bitter taste in my mouth. What could cause this?
Answer:Almost certainly you are suffering from waterbrash. Waterbrash is a bitter taste in the mouth caused by the reflux of a small amount of acid from the stomach up into the mouth where it stimulates the taste buds at the back of your tongue. If the amount of acid is significant, you may get furthet symptoms such as heartburn and burping. The treatment is to eat slowly, have sips of water (or orher non-alcoholic fluid) between mouthfuls, have small meals and if necessary use an antacid lozenge or mixture. If the symptom persists, see your general practitioner, as more significant problems may need to be excluded.
