Causes of Anal Fistula
An abscess, bacterial infection or cancer damages the tissue between the rectum and skin, allowing a false tube (fistula) to form between the rectum inside the anus, and the skin beside the anus. |
Symptoms of Anal Fistula
Liquid faeces leaks through the fistula onto the skin which becomes inflamed and painful. |
Tests for Anal Fistula
Special dye may be injected into the drainage point of the fistula and then X-rayed to see where it runs to. |
Treatment for Anal Fistula
Quite difficult surgery is necessary to close the fistula.

Rarely a fistula may develop between the last part of the rectum and the vagina or bladder. |
