Causes of Beriberi
Lack of thiamine (vitamin B1) in the diet of those who are malnourished, have food idiosyncrasies, overcook their food, in alcoholics (who obtain nutrition from alcohol and neglect normal food) and in those who require abnormally large amounts of thiamine due to an overactive thyroid gland or prolonged fever. |
Symptoms of Beriberi
Early stages multitude of vague complaints including tiredness, loss of appetite, twitching, and muscle cramps and pains. Late stages swollen joints, shooting pains, paralysis of feet and hands, and heart abnormalities. |
Tests for Beriberi
Diagnosed by specific blood tests. |
Treatment for Beriberi
Thiamine supplements (initially by injection in severe cases) and a well-balanced diet.

Permanent organ damage possible in advanced cases. |
