Cat Scratch Disease

Medical Questions » Cat Scratch Disease
Name: Cat Scratch Disease
Also known as:
A curious condition caused by a scratch from a cat claw, often to the face.
Causes of Cat Scratch Disease
The bacterium Bartonella henselae that may be present on cat paws. When a person is scratched by a cat, the bacteria enter the damaged tissue.
Symptoms of Cat Scratch Disease
A few days after being scratched, about one third of patients develop a scab-covered sore at the site of the scratch. Between one and three weeks later, a fever and headache occur, and are accompanied by enlarged lymph nodes in the groin and the side of the neck or armpit nearest the scratch. Occasionally the infected nodes develop into an abscess.
Tests for Cat Scratch Disease
No specific tests to confirm the diagnosis, and blood tests merely show that an infection is present, but not what has caused the infection.
Treatment for Cat Scratch Disease
None available or necessary. Sometimes it is necessary to surgically drain an abscess.
Complications of Cat Scratch Disease of its treatment
Very rarely a form of encephalitis (brain inflammation: see separate entry) and skin rashes may occur.
Likely Outcome of Cat Scratch Disease
Usually settles spontaneously within a week or two.
