Cryptococcosis
Medical Questions » Cryptococcosis
Name: Cryptococcosis |
Also known as: |
Fungal infection of the lungs. |
Causes of Cryptococcosis Infection by the fungus Cryptococcosis neoformans which is caught by inhalation of the fungal spores into the lungs. Often carried by pigeons, and found in their droppings, which when dry can be inhaled as a dust. |
Symptoms of Cryptococcosis Often no symptoms. Those with severe infections may have chest pain and a cough. Those with reduced immunity (eg. AIDS) develop pneumonia like symptoms. |
Tests for Cryptococcosis Diagnosis is difficult. Chest X-ray shows abnormalities, but is not diagnostic. Sputum tests may be positive for the fungus, but are usually negative. Biopsy of lung often necessary to make diagnosis. |
Treatment for Cryptococcosis Often none necessary, but in severe cases anti fungal medications (eg. amphotericin B, flucytosine) are given.
|
Complications of Cryptococcosis of its treatment May spread from lungs to brain to cause a serious form of encephalitis (see separate entry). Rarely may spread to skin and bones. |
Likely Outcome of Cryptococcosis Usually settles spontaneously in lungs. May be fatal in brain. |
