A hernia due to a small piece of intestine being forced through a point of weakness in the groin, just underneath the skin, where the femoral artery passes through a small hole as it leaves the abdomen and passes to the front of the thigh. More common in women than men.
Causes of Femoral Hernia
Pressure in the abdomen from heavy work, lifting or childbirth.
Symptoms of Femoral Hernia
A small lump under the skin of the groin, that may be intermittently painful.
Tests for Femoral Hernia
Clinical diagnosis. No tests normally required, but ultrasound scan may be necessary in fat patients.
Treatment for Femoral Hernia
Surgical repair of the hernia. If constant pain occurs in the hernia, urgent surgery is necessary.
Complications of Femoral Hernia of its treatment
Very easy for the trapped intestine to become pinched, twisted, and gangrenous.
Likely Outcome of Femoral Hernia
Recurrence rate after surgery is about 5%.
