Gangrene, Gas

Medical Questions » Gangrene, Gas
Name: Gangrene, Gas
Also known as: Clostridial Myositis
Death of tissue caused by a gas producing bacteria.
Causes of Gangrene, Gas
The Clostridium welchii bacterium can infect a deep wound into which air cannot penetrate. These ' anaerobic' bacteria are widespread, but cannot survive if exposed to oxygen. They produce a chemical (toxin) that destroys damaged muscle and produces a foul-smelling gas.
Symptoms of Gangrene, Gas
The wound becomes painful and swollen, and surrounding skin discolors. Pressure over the area produces a crackling sound as tiny gas bubbles in the damaged tissue burst. A smelly discharge issues from the wound. The patient becomes feverish, delirious and comatose.
Tests for Gangrene, Gas
A swab taken from the wound shows the bacteria under a microscope. Gas bubbles in infected tissue can be seen on X-ray.
Treatment for Gangrene, Gas
Massive doses of penicillin by injection and gas gangrene antitoxin, but this is only beneficial if given very early in the infection. Surgery to cut away affected tissue is essential. High-pressure oxygen chambers normally used to treat divers with the bends may force oxygen into the tissues to destroy the bacteria.
Complications of Gangrene, Gas of its treatment
Destruction of red blood cells, damage to the liver and kidney.
Likely Outcome of Gangrene, Gas
Depends on the site of the wound, and the severity of the infection. There is a significant death rate.
