Name: Glioma
Also known as: Glioblastoma; Malignant Astrocytoma
Form of brain cancer arising from the cells that support and surround the nerve cells in the brain.
Causes of Glioma
Unknown, but higher incidence in some families and occupations (eg. petroleum processing).
Symptoms of Glioma
Variable symptoms may include personality changes, seizures, weakness in some areas and abnormal sensations.
Tests for Glioma
CT and MRI scans can usually identify the location of the tumour, but a biopsy is necessary to make a definitive diagnosis.
Treatment for Glioma
Brain surgery and radiation therapy.
Complications of Glioma of its treatment
Bleeding into the tumor may suddenly worsen the symptoms.
Likely Outcome of Glioma
Very poor.
